not exactly, it's a scaled down version of the EX5 workstation. basically, less polyphony, no physical modelling, and less DSP power. but it still has virtual analog, sampling, FDSP, and of course the usual ROM waveforms. not really worth the money, considering the EX5 is much more powerful and not much more expensive. but even it has some limitations...

I own a EX5 which is presently Yamaha's mothership do-all synth. It samples, arpeggiates, sequences and arranges with 256 stored preprogrammed or 256 stored user programmmed sounds.Has several knobs and other useful controller features...ribbon controller,2 sets of midi in/out/thru, 2 mod wheels, pitch bender,2 "scene" or patch switches, transpose switch, breath controller input for control of expressive VL voices total standard polyphony is 128! Comes with additional outputs (2 stereo pairs upgradable to 6 stereo pairs) Unfortunatley its analog modelling capabilities are somewhat limited only 2 polyphony max.has FM and analog modelling technology and a type of synthesis called FDSP for formatted digital sound processing for increased control over effects while playing live. A must have master keyboard for all uses. Similar to the Ensoniq EPS and other workstations, some limitations: seems every year people get more power hungry in what they demand from a synthesizer. the EX5 can be upgraded with Flashrom, and RAM.
Upgradable, replacable OS always being released, good service from yamaha. Only complaint-sequencer is great for step time programming and live arranging but is prone to timing errors- get it upgraded.I love this thing!!

Well, I bought it. The EX5R, that is. I'm not a professional musician, and I don't spend a lot of money on gear, but this one I liked. It's a great all-in-one workstation. I wouldn't exactly classify it as an analog modeling synth, rather as a primarily digital sample machine. It's got analog modeling capabilities, and Yamaha's totally awesome VL (wind instrument simulation) kind of synthesis. I highly recomend the optional breath controller for these kind of sounds. From my perspective VL is EX5's strongest point. The effects are pretty good too, the digital filters, reverb, chorus, etc. I particullarly like the real-time control knobs.

There are a couple of drawbacks:

1. Some say that the sound fidelity is not very good since the sample rate is only 44.1 Khz. In my personal opinion it sounds just fine, as a matter of fact, it kicks ass, but then, I'm just an amateur.

2. The transfer of data is slow. This could be pretty irritating, particularly if you use this machine professionally. I usually walk to the kitchen and raid the fridge while data loads from the built in floppy drive. I've heard that the SCSI connection is not much faster, either.

The arrpeggiator is super, the built-in sequencer I don't even use, I prefer Cubase. EX5R is a rackmount version of the EX5. EX5 has two sets of midi ports, EX5R's got only one. I could certainly use that extra interface. Oh well. All-in-all, I love it.

It'd be nice if Yamaha made the CS2X sound set available for download into the EX5. There are a few sound sets already available on the internet, I don't know the URLs by heart, but they are not hard to find. Yamaha UK site is a good source of information.

The EX7 is basically an EX5 without the VL synthesis, so it has 4 synthesis types instead of 5. The audio input is mono instead of stereo. My workaround is to sample stereo files on my computer and load them into RAM via floppy. The max no. of layers in a performance is 2. Only one insertion effect can be used instead of 2 in the EX5. However, even that is unusable if FDSP or AN synthesis (both mutually exclusive) is enabled on a patch. Otherwise it's much the same as an EX5.

we had EX5 for two years and got quite bored with it. The main problem is the soundset is very limited. Even though the synth has so many complicated ways to create sounds, it still will sound like Yamaha synth (nothing wrong with that, but we needed a wider range of sound scapes and Yamaha just sounded way too electronic newage and very little analog, it doesn't have much dinamics either). If you're looking for a powerfull workstation with lots and lots of sounds get the K2000 - I sold the yamaha for $1000 and bought K2000 for $450 and extremely happy.

Another note - Sampling in Yamaha is quite useless if you already have a computer it's much easier to use software sampler, but we have Akai S3000 anyway, so we never used the EX5 sampler. Timing may be sluggish, though I had more problems with EX5 crashes. Generally there's some bug in MIDI because EX5 kept sending some MIDI events to my interface even though I disabled all clocks, sequencers, etc... That was making my sequencer crash as well... So finally - don't waste your money if you want good sounding workstation get the K2000 - it's virtually limitless in regards to what kind of noise you want and sounds "pro-quality", if you just need a good synth, go with something cheap and something that you really like to use and love the sounds, even an MC303/505 or electrotribe will give you lots of joy :) don't bother getting the Yamaha just because it's got the top-of-the-line features.

The EX-7 is te same as the EX-5, with differences: 64 voices poliphony (128 EX-5), no VL synthesis and mono record of samples (stereo in EX-5), and 61 keys, (76 EX-5)

This is a scaled down version of the EX5, 61keys, half the polyphony, NO VL synthesis. Can't use both insert effects+AN synthesis or FDSP+AN or FDSP+inserts. fewer outputs... mono input for sampling (cf. stereo on ex5). but can use stereo samples loaded from disk.
